Double ballot fails spell double trouble for rural Idaho schools

Rural Idaho School Levies Fall Flat as Voters Reject Facility and Staff Funding Measures

Idaho school districts across the state ran into stiff resistance from taxpayers Tuesday, as voters rejected the majority of plant-facility levy proposals on the ballot. Only one facility measure passed statewide, leaving many rural districts without funding for building maintenance and construction.

Supplemental levies fared better overall, with most winning approval — but four failed, including the proposal put forward by the Payette School District. Superintendent Glen Croft said the outcome was a surprise in one respect: he expected pushback on the facility levy but believed voters would back a supplemental measure aimed at raising pay for paraprofessionals and other lower-wage staff members.

“The community is very tax sensitive,” Croft said, pointing out that Payette County ranks among the lowest in Idaho for property tax rates — a dynamic that can cut both ways for school funding requests.

Impact on Canyon County and Treasure Valley School Districts

The failed levies signal growing resistance to school funding ballot measures across rural southwestern Idaho, even when proposals are framed around employee compensation rather than capital projects. School boards in districts like Middleton and others throughout the region will be watching the results closely as they weigh future levy timing and strategy.

What Comes Next

Districts that came up short now face difficult decisions about staffing costs and facility upkeep heading into the next school year. Superintendents will likely reassess the size and scope of future proposals before returning to voters.
