ISP increasing patrols through Memorial Day weekend on SH-55

The Idaho State Police is ramping up enforcement along State Highway 55 this Memorial Day weekend, partnering with local law enforcement agencies for a high-visibility traffic effort that runs from Friday through the holiday. The operation spans the corridor from the Avimor area north to New Meadows — one of Idaho’s most heavily traveled summer routes.

Why SH-55 Is a Focus

The winding north-south highway sees a sharp jump in traffic as Treasure Valley residents head toward McCall, Cascade, and the mountain communities of Valley County. Troopers working the corridor routinely encounter speeding, aggressive maneuvers, distracted driving, and dangerous passing — behaviors that compound risk on a road that mixes passenger vehicles, motorcycles, RVs, and commercial traffic.

McCall Resident Trooper Chase McPherson noted that summer travel pressure builds quickly on SH-55. “We know people are eager to get to the mountains,” McPherson said, “but slowing down, staying patient, and driving responsibly can save lives.”

The holiday weekend also falls at the start of what safety officials call the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer — the stretch between Memorial Day and Labor Day when fatal crashes involving younger drivers rise significantly across the country.

What Drivers Should Know Before Hitting the Road

ISP offered several reminders for anyone traveling SH-55 this weekend:

Motorcycles: Riders are harder to spot and more exposed to injury. Drivers are urged to check twice before changing lanes or turning.

Large vehicles: RVs and trailers require more stopping distance and turning room. Giving them extra space reduces rear-end risk.

Work zones: Multiple active construction zones are present along the corridor. Reduced speeds and lane shifts are in effect — plan for delays and follow posted signs.

Cell coverage gaps: Portions of SH-55 have limited or no cell service. ISP recommends letting someone know your travel plans before heading into remote stretches and carrying basic emergency supplies.

Off-peak travel: Where schedules allow, traveling outside peak hours — early morning or evening — can reduce exposure to congested, high-tension traffic conditions.

Impact on Canyon County and Treasure Valley Travelers

SH-55 serves as a primary escape route for families across Canyon County and the broader Treasure Valley heading to Idaho’s recreational heartland. The enforcement zone begins near Avimor, just north of the Ada-Boise County line, placing it squarely within reach of Nampa, Caldwell, and Middleton residents making the familiar summer run up the highway. ISP’s District 3, which serves Canyon County among other southwestern Idaho counties, is coordinating the effort out of its Meridian office.

With Lake Lowell already open to boating and outdoor recreation in full swing across the region, traffic volumes on northwest Idaho corridors are expected to be especially high this weekend. Canyon County residents heading north are encouraged to build extra travel time into their plans and arrive at their destinations safely.

Those who want to recognize the broader meaning of the holiday can also take part in Canyon County’s annual fallen officer memorial ceremony, which honors the law enforcement personnel who have given their lives in service to Idaho communities.

What Comes Next

The elevated patrol presence on SH-55 is set to continue through the Memorial Day weekend. ISP has not announced a specific end date beyond the holiday, but the agency typically maintains increased summer traffic enforcement on high-volume corridors through the season.
