Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Pushes Caldwell to Pay Larger Share of Misdemeanor Costs
The Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has announced its intent to renegotiate the misdemeanor prosecution contract with the city of Caldwell, seeking a reimbursement rate that more accurately reflects Caldwell’s share of the county’s caseload.
A Growing Cost Gap
Canyon County currently spends approximately $2.4 million annually to prosecute misdemeanors across the county. Last year, Caldwell generated roughly 22.7% of that workload — yet the city’s contract reimbursed county taxpayers at a rate of only 7%. That gap meant Caldwell’s full proportionate share in 2025 would have totaled $569,114, but the city paid just $350,425, leaving other Canyon County taxpayers to cover the remaining balance.
Nampa Already on Board
Canyon County Prosecuting Attorney Chris Boyd noted that his office addressed the same cost-sharing imbalance with the city of Nampa in 2025. “They now do a pretty reasonable cost-sharing with us,” Boyd said, adding that he appreciated Caldwell’s willingness to acknowledge that costs must be fairly distributed among taxpayers.
What Comes Next
The Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is moving forward to establish a proportionate cost-sharing agreement with Caldwell. No new contract terms have been publicly finalized, but the office’s announcement signals that negotiations are underway.
