Treasure Valley Community College Launches Hands-On Energy Trades Facility in Ontario

Treasure Valley Community College is opening a new Advanced Energy and Trades Center in Ontario, Oregon, giving students in the Treasure Valley region access to dedicated lab and instructional spaces for careers in the growing energy sector.

New Facility Expands Workforce Training Options

The college purchased the building in January with funding support from the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission. The center will serve as the home base for two degree programs introduced earlier this year: an Associate of Science in Advanced Energy Systems and an Associate of Science in Facilities Maintenance Specialist. Both programs emphasize hands-on, skills-based learning aimed at preparing graduates for immediate employment.

Local Job Market Driving Demand

The timing reflects real workforce demand in the region. PacifiCorp, the Portland-based electrical energy company, currently lists 58 open positions on its website, including roles for hydroelectric power plant operators — exactly the type of work these programs are designed to support. The new facility positions TVCC graduates to compete directly for those opportunities.

For Canyon County families considering career pathways in the trades, the center represents an accessible, affordable option close to home. Workforce training at the community college level has long been one of the more cost-effective routes into stable, well-paying technical careers, particularly in Idaho and eastern Oregon’s expanding energy industry.
