Caldwell Police Officers Honored for Restraint in High-Risk Arrest

Five law enforcement officers received commendation citations from the Caldwell Police Department in May 2020 for their handling of a dangerous incident involving an armed suspect the previous month.

Caldwell Police Sgt. Kevin O’Neill, Officers Joseph Daniels, Christopher Bernard, and Robert Nicoletti, along with North Caldwell Police Sgt. Paul O’Neill, were recognized for professionalism, courage, and restraint during the April 23, 2020 incident, according to the department.

High-Risk Situation Resolved Without Injury

The officers faced a rapidly evolving and dangerous situation when they responded to a report of an armed subject. Through calm professionalism, sound tactics, teamwork, and effective communication—including overcoming a language barrier—the officers safely took the suspect into custody without injury to anyone involved, police said.

The department emphasized that incidents like this highlight the dedication, discipline, and restraint officers demonstrate under the most challenging circumstances.

Interagency Cooperation Praised

The Caldwell Police Department expressed gratitude for its strong partnership with the North Caldwell Police Department, whose assistance was described as invaluable during the incident.

Chief William Roberts and Captain Matthew DeAngelo presented the commendation citations to the officers at the May 20 ceremony.
