A free family support program based in Caldwell is helping Canyon County parents raise safer, healthier children — and stocking them with the baby supplies they need to do it. The Baby Haven program, operated through the Caldwell Salvation Army, serves families with children up to 24 months old, offering regular classes taught by local professionals alongside a points-based system that lets parents earn diapers, clothing, and other necessities for their babies.
How the Baby Haven Program Works
Participating families attend classes twice each month, with each session typically running about two hours. The curriculum covers a broad range of topics relevant to new and expectant parents, including infant safety, proper nutrition, child development milestones, and emergency preparedness. Instructors include a county representative who teaches safe sleeping practices, as well as educators from the Caldwell Police and Fire departments, who cover summer safety, water safety, and infant CPR.
Parents earn points for showing up to class and completing activities outside of it, such as scheduling doctor’s appointments and keeping children current on immunizations. Those points can then be redeemed at the Baby Haven Boutique, an on-site resource where families can shop for diapers, baby clothes, and other essentials they might otherwise struggle to afford.
Sara Morales, who participates in the program with her twin babies, described the environment as welcoming and supportive. “When we come here, I don’t want to leave,” she said. “I feel very comfortable when I’m here.”
Education as a Long-Term Investment in Canyon County Families
Program leaders see Baby Haven as more than a resource pantry — they view it as a generational investment. Captain Amy Lewis framed the mission in terms of lasting community impact, saying, “By providing the education for the parents to keep their children safe, to keep their houses safe, to keep children healthy and happy, then that’s going to change future generations.”
That philosophy is reflected in the program’s structure, which pairs tangible material support with hands-on instruction. Rather than simply distributing supplies, Baby Haven ties those resources to parental engagement and learning, encouraging families to build knowledge alongside their household stockpile.
Canyon County has seen steady population growth across Nampa, Caldwell, and surrounding Treasure Valley communities in recent years, and programs that support young families have become increasingly important as local infrastructure and social services work to keep pace with that growth. Community Baby Shower and Donation Opportunities
Baby Haven also hosts an Annual Community Baby Shower, which distributes diapers, wipes, and other baby essentials to enrolled families. Program staff have identified diapers and wipes as the two greatest ongoing needs, and community members have a direct opportunity to help meet that demand.
On June 17, participating Albertsons locations will serve as donation drop-off points, allowing shoppers to contribute supplies for Canyon County babies. For those who prefer to give online, donations are being accepted throughout the month of June.
Community-driven support efforts like this one align well with Canyon County’s tradition of neighbor-helping-neighbor, and local families looking for additional ways to connect can also explore events like the JUMP First Thursday celebration of American stories taking place in the Treasure Valley this month.
How to Get Involved or Participate
Families with children 24 months or younger who are interested in enrolling in Baby Haven can connect with the program through the Caldwell Salvation Army. The program is free to participate in, and attendance at the twice-monthly classes is the primary requirement for earning points toward the Baby Haven Boutique.
Community members who want to support the program financially or through in-kind donations can give online during June or drop off diapers and wipes at participating Albertsons locations on June 17. Program organizers say every contribution directly benefits Canyon County babies and the parents working hard to give them a healthy start.
