Church of Jesus Christ confirms location of Caldwell Temple

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has officially confirmed the location of its planned temple in Caldwell, Idaho, announcing the facility will be built on a 19.2-acre parcel near the intersection of Orchard Avenue and South Florida Avenue in Canyon County. The announcement, made in a church news release on Tuesday, marks a significant milestone for the Treasure Valley’s Latter-day Saint community and represents the third temple planned for the region.

Site Details and Project Scope

The confirmed Caldwell temple complex will encompass approximately 82,000 square feet and will include both a meeting house and an additional building alongside the main temple structure. The land, which satellite data indicates was formerly or recently used for agricultural purposes, currently sits within Canyon County boundaries less than a mile east of established residential subdivisions along Indiana Avenue.

The site’s location places it within a relatively short drive of several key landmarks and transportation corridors in the area. It is situated roughly six miles from downtown Caldwell, about 5.5 miles from downtown Nampa, and within a few miles of two Interstate 84 interchanges — the Northside Boulevard interchange and the West Karcher Road interchange. The parcel also lies just two miles from a main entrance to the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge, a federally managed area that includes Lake Lowell.

The church originally purchased the acreage in mid-July of last year. At that time, church officials declined to confirm plans for the parcel. The organization formally announced in April that it was moving forward with fifteen new temple locations worldwide, with Caldwell among them.

What the Temple Means for Canyon County

For local Latter-day Saint members, the new facility carries deep spiritual and practical significance. Elder Stephen J. Larson, a local church leader, expressed enthusiasm for the project in the Tuesday release.

“Temples are sacred and special places of worship, and we are filled with gratitude knowing one has been announced for Caldwell, Idaho,” Larson said. “The new House of the Lord will provide closer proximity for many members of the Church to serve and worship the Lord.”

The Caldwell facility will be the church’s 11th temple in Idaho and the third in the Treasure Valley. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints reports approximately 480,000 members across Idaho, organized into roughly 1,300 congregations statewide. Having a temple closer to Canyon County will reduce travel burdens for many of those members, who currently make longer drives to reach existing temple facilities.

The project is also notable for what it signals about growth in the Caldwell area. Canyon County has seen rapid residential and commercial expansion in recent years, and a development of this scale on land that was until recently farmland reflects the broader transformation of the area’s landscape. Impact on Canyon County Residents

Beyond the church’s membership, the temple complex will represent a substantial addition to the Canyon County built environment. An 82,000-square-foot campus on nearly 20 acres of former agricultural land will likely spur additional scrutiny of zoning, traffic, and infrastructure planning for that corridor as the project moves toward construction. The site’s proximity to existing neighborhoods along Indiana Avenue means area residents will have a direct interest in how development proceeds.

The community at large may also see secondary economic activity tied to the construction phase and eventual operation of a facility of this size. Similar Latter-day Saint temple projects in other parts of the country have drawn visitors from across wide geographic areas, particularly around dedication events. Residents curious about outdoor and recreational activities in the Canyon County area can find additional community event information through local city and county announcements.

What Comes Next

The church has not yet released a construction timeline or groundbreaking date for the Caldwell temple. As the project moves through local permitting and planning processes, Canyon County officials and nearby residents will have opportunities to weigh in on site development plans. Church leadership has indicated the temple is a priority, and given the land purchase was completed last year, formal design and approval processes are expected to advance in the coming months.
