Drivers traveling U.S. Highway 95 through Canyon County should plan for delays beginning Monday, June 22, as the Idaho Transportation Department launches a sealcoating project between the communities of Wilder and Parma. The work will bring daytime lane closures to a roughly ten-mile stretch of the highway and is expected to continue into early July.
What Drivers Can Expect
The project covers milepost 38 through milepost 48 on US-95. Lane restrictions will be in effect daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in both directions, though one lane will remain open throughout working hours. Flaggers and a pilot car will be on site to move traffic safely through the work zone.
ITD has confirmed that “drivers should expect daytime lane closures on US-95 in both directions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.” during the duration of the project.
Motorists heading between Caldwell, Wilder, Parma, and points north — including those commuting toward the Oregon border — will want to allow extra travel time during weekday and weekend daylight hours. Those with time-sensitive trips may want to consider departing before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. to avoid the work zone entirely.
Purpose of the Project
Sealcoating is a standard preventive maintenance technique used to protect existing pavement from moisture, oxidation, and everyday wear. When applied correctly and on schedule, it can meaningfully extend the usable life of a roadway surface — reducing the need for more costly full repaving projects down the line. The treatment also improves traction for drivers, which matters on a rural highway corridor that serves farm equipment, commercial trucks, and everyday commuters alike.
For Canyon County’s agricultural communities, US-95 between Wilder and Parma is a working road — used heavily during planting and harvest seasons to move equipment, supplies, and produce. Maintaining that corridor through targeted preservation work reflects a cost-conscious approach to infrastructure upkeep.
This project is part of broader transportation investment across the region. ITD has also been examining long-range improvements along the I-84 corridor — a separate effort aimed at addressing projected congestion and capacity concerns through a potential $300 million overhaul of that major east-west route.
Holiday Weekend Consideration
Crews will not work on Friday, July 3, in observance of the Independence Day holiday. That break will provide some relief for travelers heading out for the long weekend, as US-95 typically sees increased traffic during holiday periods as families make their way to recreational areas and gatherings across southwest Idaho.
What Comes Next
The sealcoating project is scheduled to wrap up in early July, weather permitting. ITD has not announced a specific final completion date beyond that general timeframe. Drivers are encouraged to slow down through the work zone, obey all flagger instructions, and allow additional time when traveling the Wilder-to-Parma section of US-95 during daylight hours on weekdays and weekends through the end of the project.
