I-84 to be closed overnight twice this week. Here’s when and where.

I-84 Overnight Closures Scheduled in Nampa This Week as State Highway 16 Extension Project Continues in Idaho

NAMPA, Idaho — Drivers traveling on Interstate 84 through the Treasure Valley should plan for overnight lane closures this week as the Idaho Transportation Department continues construction work on the State Highway 16 interchange and corridor extension project. The closures will affect a stretch of I-84 between the Garrity Boulevard interchange at Exit 38 and the Ten Mile Road interchange at Exit 42 in the Nampa area.

When and Where the I-84 Closures Will Happen

According to the Idaho Transportation Department, two separate overnight closures are scheduled this week. On Tuesday, May 5, the westbound lanes of I-84 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Drivers will be detoured to Franklin Road during that closure.

The second closure is scheduled for Friday, May 8, when the eastbound lanes of I-84 will be shut down during the same overnight window — 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. — with traffic again being directed to Franklin Road as the detour route.

Both closures are tied to ongoing construction on the State Highway 16 interchange as part of the broader Highway 16 extension project. ITD has indicated that additional nighttime closures on I-84 are expected to continue into the summer months as construction progresses.

Background on the Highway 16 Corridor Project

The State Highway 16 extension project is one of the most significant transportation infrastructure undertakings currently underway in Canyon County. The project aims to extend Highway 16 to run north and south between Highway 44 and Interstate 84, creating a new continuous corridor through a portion of the Treasure Valley that has seen rapid residential and commercial growth in recent years.

Currently, Highway 16 ends at Chinden Boulevard, requiring southbound traffic to exit onto Chinden before the road terminates. The extension will connect that corridor directly to I-84, relieving pressure on existing transportation routes through Nampa and the surrounding area.

According to the project’s official website, the entire Highway 16 corridor is on track to open in 2027. The project represents a major investment in the region’s transportation infrastructure at a time when Canyon County’s population continues to grow rapidly, straining existing roads and highways.

Canyon County’s growth has also brought construction-related disruptions to local businesses and commuters. Similar challenges have been felt closer to downtown Nampa, where the community has rallied around businesses like Old Country Sausage affected by the 11th Avenue road construction project.

Impact on Canyon County Commuters and Travelers

The overnight timing of both closures — 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. — is designed to minimize disruption to daytime traffic volumes on one of the Treasure Valley’s primary east-west corridors. However, commercial truckers, late-night travelers, and early-morning commuters should be aware of the detour routes and factor in additional travel time.

Franklin Road, the designated detour for both closures, runs parallel to I-84 through the Nampa area and can handle diverted traffic, though drivers should expect slower travel speeds and increased congestion during the closure windows.

Residents in the broader Canyon County region — including those traveling between Caldwell to the west and Nampa or the Ada County line to the east — should plan accordingly on both Tuesday and Friday nights this week.

For drivers heading out toward Lake Lowell or other recreational destinations in Canyon County, it may be worth checking road conditions before departing during the closure hours. Lake Lowell opened for boating on April 15, drawing increased traffic to the area during spring and summer months.

What Comes Next for the Highway 16 Project

The Idaho Transportation Department has confirmed that more overnight closures on I-84 are expected through the summer as work on the Highway 16 interchange continues. Residents and regular commuters should monitor ITD’s travel information resources for the most up-to-date closure schedules.
