An insurance trust serving more than 100 Idaho school districts and charter schools has exhausted its reserve funds, forcing member institutions across Canyon County and statewide to absorb the resulting shortfall. The trust’s benefit manager, Debbie Hainke, notified participating schools of the depletion in late July, citing unexpectedly high medical claims throughout the past year.
Schools participating in the cooperative trust arrangement are now responsible for covering the deficit. “Medical claims have been extremely high over the last year and the trust has exhausted its reserve funds to pay those high claims,” Hainke stated in her notice to members.
The development creates immediate budget pressures for districts already managing tight fiscal calendars. Idaho school administrators face difficult choices as they work to address the debt obligation while maintaining classroom funding and services for students.
