Nampa Driver Faces Manslaughter Charges After Fatal Crash Kills Pregnant Woman and Infant

A Nampa driver is facing two counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter following a multi-vehicle collision in Canyon County that resulted in the deaths of a 19-year-old pregnant woman and her newborn daughter, according to reports from kivitv.com. The charges against Abigail Nicole Wolverton were amended after she was initially booked on DUI-related offenses.

Fatal Collision at Middleton Road

The crash occurred on the morning of August 31 at approximately 9:46 a.m. near the intersection of Middleton Road and Lake Lowell Avenue in Nampa. Emergency responders from Nampa Police, Nampa Fire District, and Canyon County Paramedics arrived at the scene to find Kyara L. Engelhart, 19, of Caldwell, suffering life-threatening injuries. Engelhart was eight months pregnant at the time of the accident.

Medical professionals performed an emergency cesarean section on the day of the crash to save the unborn child. While Engelhart remained hospitalized, she passed away on Thursday, September 3. Her daughter, Maelynn M. Lindauer, survived the initial extraction but died six days later on Monday, September 7.

Charges Amended to Manslaughter

Wolverton, 29, of Nampa, was arrested on September 3 and booked into Canyon County Jail. Prosecutors initially filed two counts of aggravated DUI and one count of injury to a child. Those charges have since been amended to two counts of aggravated vehicular manslaughter, reflecting the deaths of both Engelhart and her infant daughter. Wolverton continues to face the separate charge of injury to a child involving a minor in her vehicle.

Sgt. Doug Harward emphasized the severity of impaired driving in these incidents. “This case is a stark reminder of the result of impaired driving,” Harward said, as first reported by kivitv.com.

Court Proceedings and Bond Conditions

During a video court appearance on September 4, Judge Matthew Thompson set Wolverton’s bond at $2 million. The judge imposed strict pretrial release conditions designed to ensure public safety while the investigation continues. These conditions include mandatory reporting to pretrial services, adherence to a curfew, and absolute abstinence from alcohol and drugs with regular testing required.

Critically, Wolverton is prohibited from possessing or operating any motor vehicle while awaiting trial. The defense has indicated an intention to argue for bond adjustments during the upcoming preliminary hearing, which is scheduled for September 18 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Thompson.

Impact on Canyon County Families

The tragedy has left a significant void in the local community. Friends remember Engelhart as a vibrant young woman with deep roots in the area. One close friend, Hailey Hennessy, noted that she had known Engelhart for 15 years, having met her when they were both five years old. The loss of two lives from a single crash underscores the ongoing dangers of impaired driving on Canyon County roads.

Law enforcement officials stated that the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash remains ongoing. Residents in Nampa and Caldwell are urged to exercise caution and report any suspected impaired drivers to local authorities.
