Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa celebrated its 110th commencement ceremony on Saturday, conferring degrees on 390 graduates from undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The event marked a significant milestone as the first commencement led by the university’s 14th president, Dr. Mark DeMichael.
The ceremonies took place on the NNU campus, honoring students who completed their studies across various academic disciplines. The graduating class represents the culmination of years of study at the Christian liberal arts institution.
New Leadership at the Helm
Dr. DeMichael, speaking at the ceremony, emphasized the university’s mission-driven approach to education. He noted that graduates have been prepared not only for professional careers but also grounded in faith and character. The president expressed the university’s pride in the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 and highlighted the institution’s focus on Christ-centered education aimed at transforming the whole person.
According to Dr. DeMichael, the university’s goal is for graduates to serve as leaders who make meaningful contributions in their communities and professions while maintaining their commitment to faith-based values.
Honorary Degree Recognizes Decades of Ministry
The university presented an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Reverend J. Scott Shaw during the commencement ceremonies. The honor recognizes Shaw’s 42 years of service in ministry within the Church of the Nazarene.
Reverend Shaw, who earned his undergraduate degree from Northwest Nazarene College and later attended Nazarene Theological Seminary, dedicated more than four decades to church leadership. He spent his final ten years in ministry serving as District Superintendent for the Intermountain District, where he oversaw churches and ministers across the region.
In that role, Shaw provided pastoral guidance and strategic direction for congregations throughout the district. The university recognizes his impact on both the broader church community and the institution itself.

Northwest Nazarene University serves as a significant educational institution in Canyon County, providing higher education opportunities for local students and contributing to the region’s workforce development. The graduation of 390 students represents the addition of trained professionals to Idaho’s economy and workforce across multiple fields.
The university’s emphasis on faith-based education aligns with the values of many Canyon County families who seek educational options that integrate Christian principles with academic preparation. NNU’s presence in Nampa strengthens the city’s educational infrastructure and provides employment opportunities for local residents.
