A Sunday morning crash on Interstate 84 in Nampa sent one man to the hospital and shut down westbound traffic for roughly an hour and a half, according to the Idaho State Police.
The collision happened at approximately 5:48 a.m. at the westbound off-ramp near the Karcher Road exit. A Mazda 5 traveling westbound struck a Volvo truck-tractor and a Great Dane trailer at that location.
The Mazda’s driver, identified as a 23-year-old male from Ontario, was taken to a local hospital by ground ambulance. The Volvo’s driver, a 54-year-old man from Beaverton, Oregon, was not transported and did not require emergency medical transport. Idaho State Police confirmed both men were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Multiple Agencies Respond to Karcher Road Exit
Several Canyon County emergency agencies converged on the scene to assist with the response and clear the roadway. The Nampa Police Department, Nampa Fire Department, and Canyon County Paramedics all provided support alongside Idaho State Police troopers. Westbound lanes remained closed while crews worked to clear the wreckage before reopening roughly 90 minutes after the initial call.
Idaho State Police have opened an investigation into the circumstances of the crash. No additional details regarding fault or contributing factors have been released at this time.
Impact on Canyon County Commuters
Early morning closures on I-84 in the Nampa corridor can back up traffic significantly, particularly near high-volume interchange points like Karcher Road. The Treasure Valley’s continued growth has made I-84 through Canyon County one of the busiest stretches of highway in the state, and incidents in the early morning hours can affect shift workers, truckers, and commuters heading into the Boise metro area.
