The Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District has detected West Nile virus in mosquito samples collected from two separate locations — one northwest of Caldwell and another in the Nampa area — even as total mosquito numbers remain below historical averages.
The discovery highlights a counterintuitive public health challenge: fewer mosquitoes overall does not necessarily mean lower disease transmission risk. James Lunders, district director of the Canyon County Mosquito Abatement District, explained that while the decline in total mosquito numbers might seem favorable, the composition of remaining populations presents its own challenges. “In general, if you take the district as a whole, we’re seeing mosquito numbers generally this year have been lower,” Lunders said. However, he cautioned that the species now dominating local habitats carry distinct behavioral and epidemiological traits.
A Sneakier Vector for West Nile Virus
Culex mosquitoes differ from their floodwater cousins in ways that make them particularly difficult for residents to detect. Unlike species that bite noticeably during active hours, Culex mosquitoes are subtle feeders. “They’re also a lot sneakier. So people don’t tend to notice that they’re being bit by those species of mosquitoes, but those are the ones that can make you sick,” Lunders noted.

The virus spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito and can cause serious illness, particularly in older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions. As of the district’s most recent report, no human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Idaho. Animal cases have also not been documented. However, the detection of the virus in mosquito populations collected within Canyon County indicates active circulation of the pathogen in local environments.
The identification of West Nile virus in two mosquito collection sites — particularly in and around Nampa and the Caldwell area — serves as an early warning for residents.
