Nampa Police Arrest 6 in Organized Shoplifting Ring Targeting Canyon County Retailers

Nampa Police arrested six individuals Thursday in connection with an organized retail theft ring that investigators estimate stole over $180,000 in merchandise from Canyon County retailers over a four-month period, targeting power tools, electronics, and high-value consumer goods at Home Depot, Walmart, Target, and Lowe’s stores across Nampa and Caldwell. The arrests capped a multi-agency investigation led by Nampa PD’s property crimes unit with assistance from the Caldwell Police Department, Canyon County Sheriff’s Office, and store loss prevention teams.

The six suspects — ranging in age from 22 to 41 — are each charged with organized retail theft, a felony under Idaho law that carries enhanced penalties when theft is conducted as part of a coordinated scheme. Additional charges of trafficking in stolen property were filed against two suspects who investigators allege operated an online resale operation, listing stolen goods on Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp at 30-50% below retail price.

How the Ring Operated

According to court documents, the ring operated in teams of two or three, entering stores during busy periods and filling carts with targeted merchandise — primarily DeWalt and Milwaukee power tools, Apple AirPods, Dyson vacuums, and LEGO sets — before exiting through garden center entrances or self-checkout areas. The teams used coordinated techniques including decoy shoppers who distracted loss prevention staff while others loaded merchandise into vehicles parked near exits.

Investigators estimate the ring conducted over 60 individual theft incidents across six Canyon County retail locations between October 2025 and February 2026. The $180,000 estimated total was calculated from store inventory shrinkage reports, surveillance footage analysis, and recovered merchandise found during search warrant execution at three Canyon County residences.

Nampa Police Detective Carlos Mendez, who led the investigation, said organized retail theft has become one of the fastest-growing crime categories in Canyon County. “This isn’t someone pocketing a candy bar,” Mendez said. “This is a coordinated criminal enterprise that treats retail theft as a business. They had routes, schedules, target lists, and a distribution network for selling the stolen goods. The scale rivals a legitimate small business — except every dollar of revenue was stolen.”

Impact on Canyon County Businesses and Consumers

Organized retail theft drives up costs for all Canyon County consumers, as retailers build theft losses into their pricing and may reduce store hours, add security measures, or close locations in areas with high theft rates. The National Retail Federation estimates that organized retail crime costs the U.S. retail industry approximately $100 billion annually — costs that are ultimately passed to consumers through higher prices.

Local store managers expressed frustration that the theft ring operated for months despite internal reports to law enforcement. A Home Depot manager (who declined to be named) said the Nampa store alone lost an estimated $45,000 to the ring. “Our employees are trained to observe and report, not to physically confront shoplifters,” the manager said. “We depend on law enforcement to make these arrests, and we’re grateful that Nampa PD put the resources into this investigation.”

What Comes Next

The six suspects are scheduled for preliminary hearings in Canyon County Magistrate Court on March 14. Investigators say the case remains active and additional charges are possible. Canyon County residents who purchased goods from the identified suspects’ online marketplace accounts may be contacted by investigators as witnesses. Reports of suspected organized shoplifting at Canyon County retailers can be made to the Nampa Police non-emergency line at 208-465-2257.
